In collaboration with LOA, Catalysts developed on behalf of ESA the world’s best (albeit most complex) algorithm for aerosol detection. The focus of the runtime optimization is at the parallelization of the computations, in order to make the algorithm “GRASP” fast enough for the calculation of the aerosol particles in the atmosphere. The resulting data are used for a better understanding of the global climate development.

ESRIN/ESA: Satellite Processing

For several decades, atmospheric researchers wrote umpteen thousand lines of Fortran code that was always varied and complex, with the aim to provide the best possible results without ever to bear in mind the run time. If you were to apply the original algorithm on the same data for a 100-minute satellite orbit, one would have to wait months for the result – to a productive use is therefore not to think of.

In this project GRASP is optimized towards runtime and memory requirement. The objective is to deliver both real ime results and reprocess the data collected over several years.
