On Sunday, 13th of February, I arrived in Barcelona and completed my registration for the Mobile World Congress 2011, 14–17 February at Fira Montjuic.

On the first congress day, I attended the Nokia Developer conference to get the latest news about the cooperation of Microsoft and Nokia. According to Nokia’s CTO Rich Green, Symbian and MeeGo are still alive, these platforms will be supported in the future and there will be updates, but in the long run, Windows Phone will be the platform for Nokia’s smartphones. The first devices with Windows Phone should be available in 2012, but exact release plans haven’t been mentioned. Although there wasn’t a concrete statement on how apps will be distributed to devices – either via the Windows Phone Marketplace or through a customized version of Nokia’s Ovi Store – apps that are developed for the Windows Marketplace will be compatible with the new Nokia phones. Thus, if we decide to develop taskmind for the Windows Phone platform, the same app will be available for the latest Nokia devices too, great!

Afterwards in the afternoon I watched the Keynote of Steve Ballmer, CEO Microsoft, on a big video wall and walked through the huge congress area together with people from all over the world. It was quite interesting to see how smartphones and tablets are replacing the conventional notebook. A lot of people were writing eMails, surfing in the Internet, … maybe using taskmind to coordinate with their colleagues ;), on their mobile devices (I saw many iPads), but I have noticed only few people using a laptop computer or netbook. To sum it up, it was a great and very interesting day and I am looking forward to the next days here in Barcelona. Stay tuned, I will provide some updates to this blog!
